The churches of the region of Angers are an important landmark in the history of French religious buildings. After decades of neglect, the restoration of Saint-Etienne stands as a symbol of the rebirth of the city of Saumur.
During the project, the church and adjacent historic buildings were partially dismantled because of structural problems. Some parts of the building were carefully lifted stone by stone, and a structural reinforcement was implemented using metal rods .
With the conventional use of materials and forms common in rural and religious past, SA Architects reinterprets the religious architecture of Saumur, with a view to respecting the construction campaigns of the building and its interior and exterior détails.
